SALISBURY, MD – The fastest growing occupation in healthcare across the nation is that of “Registered Nurse.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that registered nurse employment will grow at a rate of 26 percent between 2010 and 2020 thanks to higher healthcare demands from aging Baby Boomers.
“We have seen this scenario play out over the last three years as demand for nursing services has doubled,” said Nancy Bagwell, Maryland Branch Director for Peninsula Home Care. “What is very interesting is how RN service needs are growing. Baby Boomers are younger and fitter than the generation ahead of them, so they have more issues with activity-based injuries like bicycle falls, as well as ‘repair’ surgeries such as knee replacements. Our own registered nursing staff has (doubled) and we continue to seek additional RN team members.”
Every year, National Nurses Week, which this year begins May 6, focuses attention on the diverse ways America’s 3.1 million registered nurses work to save lives and improve the health of millions of individuals. The first day of the week is designated as RN Recognition Day and the final day, May 12, is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing.
Nursing has undoubtedly evolved over time with the introduction of cutting edge technology and specialty nursing professions such as medical-surgical nurses, labor and delivery nurses, ICU nurses and home health care nurses.
Home Health Care Nurses – Passionate about Putting the Patient First
There is no one for a home health nurse to turn to for a second opinion while treating a patient in the home. Peninsula Home Care nurses partner with the patient and caregiver to better understand medications, how to safely navigate in the home and develop an individualized plan of care in coordination with the physician.
“What puts a smile on the faces of our home care nurses? Seeing patients achieve their goals and provide support to the patient and family to help them from beginning to end,” said Bagwell. “We are there helping them through difficult times and they become like family. We share in their success and in their setbacks. I think Florence Nightingale would be pleased with the quality of care provided by our home care nurses.”

During National Nurses Week and throughout the month of May, Peninsula Home Care is recognizing three staff RN’s as “Outstanding Nurse of the Year.” Each winner was nominated internally by other staff members and all nominations were voted on by a team of PHC leaders and third party volunteers.
The following Peninsula Home Care RN’s were selected as “Outstanding Nurse of the Year.”
Gena Hammond – Seaford Branch
Gena Hammond – Seaford Branch
Gena has been a registered nurse (RN) for 18 years, five of which have been spent with Peninsula Home Care (PHC). Her occupational experience ranges from oncology/chemotherapy, neurology, mental health, nursery (mother/baby), and geriatrics. Her favorite part of home care is the close, social interaction with patients in their home environment. Gena believes that everyone deserves exceptional care and education, offered with gentleness and respect.
With PHC, Gena works as a RN case manager in the Laurel/Delmar, DE areas. Gena has also been with Peninsula Regional Medical Center for 15 years. Previously, she worked with St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, DE, for three years and Nanticoke Memorial Hospital for four years. Gena earned her Associates degree in Nursing Science at Del Tech and is going back for a Nurse Practitioner’s degree in the fall of 2015.

Stephanie has been a part of Peninsula Home Care (PHC) as a registered nurse (RN) for two years. She has worked in the nursing field for fourteen years in other positions such as a charge nurse, professional development urology nurse and a nurse manager.
Stephanie has her chemotherapy certification from Wor-Wic Community College. She is also orthopedic certified.
Her favorite part of working for PHC is educating patients and helping them manage their diseases, providing wound care and medications in the home.

Christine Yingling – Salisbury Branch
Christine has been a registered nurse (RN) at Peninsula Home Care (PHC) for five and a half years and has worked in the profession for seventeen years. She began at PHC as a part-time nurse and transitioned to a full-time case manager. Christine’s favorite part about being a nurse is her patients. She loves helping people and watching them gain back their independence.
Before joining PHC, Christine worked at PRMC for ten years in a variety of departments. She also worked in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah, GA and Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.
She has earned her Associate’s degree and is chemotherapy certified.
